Sometimes a house is just the right size for your family and in the perfect location, but the interior of the home just doesn’t hit the mark. Don’t turn your back on it just yet, maybe an interior renovation can give you everything you hoped to have in a new home. That’s what Studio21 Architects did on this Wheaton home for a family moving into the area from out of town.
Dated décor, a boxy oor plan with small rooms on the rst oor, and a poorly conceived three bedroom layout upstairs was everything this young family was not looking for in a new home.
However, they saw the value in the location and property and had high hopes for creating a new oor plan within the existing home that met all their needs and style. By opening up the first floor plan, we were able to create a more contemporary open-concept plan with a large kitchen and dining area open to the family room. An existing masonry replace that separated rooms that had been hidden behind cheap veneer stone and wood paneling was brought back to life by stripping the coverings, adding an appealing focal point to the dining area. That same chimney was exposed in the master bedroom above for a unique focal point as well. By redesigning the second floor plan we were able to accommodate 4 bedrooms, 2 1⁄2 baths and laundry room. All of this without adding a single square foot to the home.
In the end, the homeowners had a brand new interior in every portion of the home, and a plan that works for their family needs.
