|I’ve been involved in the construction industry for so long it’s hard for me to imagine how daunting it can be for someone ready to embark upon a construction project for the first time. If you haven’t experienced it before, it can be both exhilarating and yet a very frightening experience at the same time.|
The euphoria is easy: a new start, fresh spaces, more room, a comfortable new home or office. The reasons are endless and if it were easy, everyone would do it.
What makes it so terrifying? There can be several fears: Where to start? How much to budget? Will the project stay in budget? How long will it take to complete? Am I making the right decisions? Will my marriage survive the chaos? How do I know I’ve selected the right team? Am I being taken advantage of?
The process of building is not easy. In fact, there will likely be mistakes and regrets along the way, not only by you, but by your architect and your contractor. The process is way too complex not to have some difficulties along the way. The important thing is plan ahead and minimize the potential for mistakes.
When we start working with a client, we try to determine what are the motivating factors behind their project. This is important so they can determine what really motivates them and what results are truly important. We have several tools to assist in this process and we start with our “Lifestyle Questionnaire”. Next we help them prepare a wish list. We always suggest they imagine living in the spaces they’ve created so that they can visualize the completed project. This visualization is further reinforced when we provide 3-D versions of the spaces. The vision is ultimately theirs, we just help them bring it to life.
It’s vital that clients create what’s important to them and their family, not someone else’s version of the perfect project. We are there to inspire, provide guidance and help make all the pieces of the puzzle come together, but our client is the true visionary of their own project.
If you take the right attitude with the right team, the process can be fun and rewarding. The first step in the process is to select the right architect. We won’t always be the right fit for your project, however we can provide some helpful hints to help you identify who would be!
